Day Thirty-Eight
11:59pm 08/07/2006
  What I Completed Today:

Today was the Kenny concert down at LP Field, so there was a lot to do, but not a lot of variety.

We loaded up and headed down to what would become "Kenny-town" about 10AM. There were rigged up all of the electrical equipment for the "Kennyoke" and decorated the grandstand.

Then we walked over to our spot for the day and set up the tent. We handed out fliers and registered people to win tickets to see Dwight Yoakum (sp?) all day long.

What I Learned Today:

Kenny draws a huge crowd of drunk people.

The fliers we hand were for the official after-party. All we had to do to get rid of them was say "official afterparty" and people assumed Kenny would be there.

Day Thirty-Seven
01:54am 08/07/2006

mood: nervous
What I Completed Today:

Checked Cliff's e-mails and sorted the contest entries into subfolders.

Created prize bins for the Kenny Chesney concert tomorrow.

Updated the Kenny concert on the website with new information.

Went through Cliff's H Drive and cleaned up all old logos and outdated information.

Helped the other interns wash down the company vehicles, including the Helmet Cart and the Bayou Buggy for use at the Kenny Chesney concert.

Then we went over to the Country Monkey for the all-night sleepover to win front row seats and meet and greet passes for Kenny Chesney.

There, we had to register contestants and give them the rundown of the rules.

We also had to take 1 hour shifts guarding the doors so nobody could leave.

In between, we helped with the games we had for various prizes.

What I Learned Today:

Preparing for the biggest concert of the summer is nerve-racking.

Working at a bar all night long is very boring and tiring.

Day Thirty-Six
11:08pm 04/07/2006

mood: bouncy
What I Completed Today:

We got to the station and had to finish making flyers for the tent down at Riverfront today, then we headed downtown.

We set up the tent for BOTH stations and got everything going, then we had to greet listeners and fans all day long.

On top of greeting, we had to hand out WKDF 4th of July bracelets and the 3000 flyers we had made before going downtown.

I finally decided to wrap the flyers up and stick them inside the bracelets, so everyone who took a bracelet got a flyer.

Then later on down at Riverfront, we made our way to the front of the stage area and took pictures of Danielle Peck, Josh Turner, Ronnie Milsap and the fireworks.

We even used the shirt I was wearing to advertise the station. It was a WKDF t-shirt, but I had a tank top on underneath it, so I pulled the t-shirt off. We added a "<3's Danielle" to the bottom of the WKDF logo and waved it around the whole concert. Needless to say, since the concert was braodcast live on national TV, we succeeded in getting the shirt on TV. Our bosses were getting phone calls like crazy from people saying they had seen the shirt on TV.

After the concer was over, we got the hang out backstage with Danielle Peck's band and meet her.

What I Learned Today:

July is even hotter than June.

People still want anything that's free.

Flyering is STILL not fun.

Being a VIP is kinda cool. As long as you don't use the station's name to get you anywhere, it's actually okay to ask to go backstage.

Day Thirty-Five
06:18pm 30/06/2006

mood: cranky
What I Completed Today:

Made up prize bins for the next week and a gigantic prize bin for the 4th of July festivities.

Updated the Opry portion of the website with who is playing this week.

Created registration boxes for the Kenny Chesney concert ticket giveaway, Tim & Faith ticket giveaway and Titans training camp VIP passes giveaway.

Selected 5 Saturday Opry winners and 3 Tuesday Opry winners and called them.

Called the Hootie and the Blowfish ticket winners to make sure they were picking up their tickets.

Called the Danielle Peck ticket winners to make sure they were picking up their tickets.

Removed the World Poker Tour banner from the 104 website and added it to the 103 website.

Called a sticker company about placing an order for more stickers and decals and described what we wanted to him. Had him fax over an invoice and sample.

Went through the hundreds of entries for the Kenny Chesney look-a-like contest and chose 20 for our Top 20 and added them to the website.

What I Learned Today:

There are a lot of people who win free stuff, but never come to pick it up. As a result, I was given a pair of tickets to the Hootie and the Blowfish concert for free.

Ordering stickers and decals can be a royal pain in the butt, because there are so many styles to choose from and just selecting a font is hassle enough.

mood: drained
What I Completed Today:

CMA presentation, CMA presentation and MORE CMA presentation. Today was the last day to work on it to get it all in order. We had to finish all of the pages, organize them into categories, proofread and double-check everything and then reorganize and correct.

What I Learned Today:

This should NOT be put off last minute, but it always is.

Day Thirty-Three

Wat I Completed Today:

Checked Cliff's e-mail and sorted contest entries itno subfolders.

Did the weekly updates for the websites.

Did the weekly contest updates.

Made winner sheets for 104 The Zone's Kenny Chesney ticket giveaway and gave to Laura.

Worked on the CMA presentation.

What I Learned Today:

The CMA presentation should be done throughout the year as events come up. It should NOT be the way it currently is. The people working in the office now, primarily the interns who are making the presentations... have absolutely no idea what happened last year. Neither will the interns next summer know what went on this year.

No matter how hard we work on the CMA presentation, something always has to be changed. If they want the verbiage done a certain way, they should write it themselves BEFORE we make the page instead of let us make the page, THEN write the verbiage and make us do it all over again. It's wasting precious time. This thing is due Thursday.

What I Completed Today:

Checked Cliff's e-mail and sorted the contest entries into subfolders.

Paired and stapled Hootie and the Blowfish (with special guests) comp tickets into pairs. Had a total of 60 to do.

Paired and stapled Def Leppard/Journey comp tickets into pairs. Had 40 to do.

Faxed the reciept for the tickets to the marketing department of LiveNation to let them know we had gotten them and had everything.

Called the latest Kenny Chesney tickets winner to let her know she had won, but got a wrong number.

Updated the Saturday Opry and who is going to be appearing.

Researched Karaoke rentals in the Nashville area for Cindy.

Searched through Vicki's e-mail and harddrive to find a letter of notification of winnings for a contest that was back in March.

Worked on the CMA presentation for the rest of the day.

What I Learned Today:

We get a LOT of comp tickets because we offer to announce the concert on-air in exchange for the tickets (at least for part of the price of advertising).

Updated the weekly contests.

Emailed Hugh about a winner mix-up and helped sort out the mix-up.

Checked Cliff's e-mail and sorted out the contest entries into subfolders.

What I Completed Today:

Checked Cliff's e-mail and sorted the contest entries into subfolders.

Cross-checked all pictures on the station cameras with what had already been uploaded. I deleted the ones that had been uploaded, then uploaded all of the ones that hadn't. Sorted them out into categories and then sent them to Cliff.

Added more Beach Party pictures to the website.

Added CMA Fest pictures to the website.

Put the Blockbuster/Glory road winner announcement on the website.

Made up 10 "Father's Day" prize packs from various leftovers in the prize closet.

Went out with Lauren to Bellevue and handed out the above prize packs to the first 10 people who showed up after hearing the announcement on the air.

Went to the Dickson Rodeo to help out with the remote. Set up the table and tent and kept it manned while Lauren was doing techie stuff to make sure Eddie stayed on the air.

What I Learned Today:

Rodeos are interesting, but not for me. It bothers me how they get the bulls to buck.

It is hot as HELL in Tennessee.

Day Twenty-Seven

What I Completed Today:

Went through the rest of the year and collected all the paperwork for all remotes and van appearances that are already scheduled. Transferred all of them to the respective calendar for the rest of the year and saved them into a new folder so they can be updated as events are added.

Added all of the upcoming concerts at Starwood Aphitheatre to the calendars.

Worked on creating an Excel spreadsheet for the CMA presentation to streamline its production. I located all of the pictures of all of the events that pertain to this presentation and listed the location of the pictures, as well as the dates of the events. Also printed out any relevant information for verbiage on the presentation

What I Learned Today:

Sometimes time flies when you're working hard.

Calendars take forever to do, especially when you're doing 6 months work of calendars for TWO stations.

Day Twenty-Six

What I Completed Today:

We set up the tent outside LP Field (formerly known as the Coliseum) for the day. We had to put up the table and the tent with the sides. Then we sat there for a long time (6 hours or so) and greeted country music fans as they were entering the Coliseum and allowed them to sign up to win autographed stuff from our prize closet. We saw people from Cananda even.

We didn't have any flyers today to hand out, which was a bit of a relief actually.

By the time everyone was inside (for the most part anyway), we broke down the tent and headed inside ourselves, since they gave us free 4-day passes to the event.

What I Learned Today:

Country music fans, including myself, are dedicated. Not only do they come from all over, but about 1/3 of the crowd stuck out an hour and a half long wait for a storm to pass over. Since the event was outside, it had to be shut down when the lightning and torrential rains swept though. (But Sugarland still performed after-wards! Too bad Gretchen Wilson cancelled....)

I now know why everyone at the station refers to this week as hell week. I feel like I could pass out and sleep for days...

What I Completed Today:

We got downtown and over to LP a little bit later, but Cliff showed up after us so it was okay.

When the lines began to really thicken at the front gate, we headed off to flyer everyone. We had a bunch of flyers advertising the after-party at the Country Monkey and we had to randomly hand them out to everyone to try to get them to come over there once the nightly show let out.

By the time everyone was inside (for the most part anyway), we broke down the tent and headed inside ourselves, since they gave us free 4-day passes to the event.

What I Learned Today:

People actually got annoyed that we couldn't give them anything free, such as a sticker or t-shirt. But it CMA Fest rules...radio stations could not give away t-shirts because they were selling them, no stickers or any sorts... and we gave away the alloted amount of keychains the first day.

Saturday night carries the biggest names of CMA Fest.

What I Completed Today:

Because of my wreck last night, I almost didn't go into work today. Cliff told me to not bother coming back until Wednesday, but I refused to let some idiot screw up my week so I went anyway. I drove up to the station carefully and got Lisa to drop me off downtown and I took the shuttle over to LP Field.

They had already set the table up by the time I got there. Then we sat there and greeted country music fans as they were entering the Coliseum and allowed them to sign up to win autographed stuff from our prize closet. We saw people from Cananda even.

When the lines began to really thicken at the front gate, we headed off to flyer everyone. We had a bunch of flyers advertising the after-party (and country music video filming) at the Country Monkey and we had to randomly hand them out to everyone to try to get them to come over there once the nightly show let out.

By the time everyone was inside (for the most part anyway), we broke down the tent and headed inside ourselves, since they gave us free 4-day passes to the event.

What I Learned Today:

People will take a flyer from you just to get you to shut up sometimes.

You can't complain about free. Our seats really aren't the BEST, but they're not downright terrible. Just not good for taking pictures, unless you want pictures of the screen.

What I Completed Today:

Met at the station at 5 AM to go downtown to do Good Morning America. When we got there, we walked through the crowd that had gathered and gave away freee admissions to the screening of the new movie '8th of November' on which the Big & Rich song is based. We had about 100 of those to give away

Then we singled out Billy Currington fans and gave away VIP tickets to the Nashville Acoustic Showcase which included prime seats, a parking pass and entrance to the meet and greet session afterwards.

Later that afternoon, we set up the tent outside LP Field (formerly known as the Coliseum) for the day. We had to put up the table and the tent with the sides. Then we sat there for a long time (6 hours or so) and greeted country music fans as they were entering the Coliseum and allowed them to sign up to win autographed stuff from our prize closet. What I Learned Today:

People really DO come from all over for CMA Music Fest.

Tennessee is miserably hot in June if it doesn't rain.

Good Morning America was a waste of time for us to go to. We did make a couple new friends though.

It is SCARY to get hit by a drunk driver. I got rear-ended by one on the way home and my poor car is now a member of the crunchy-club. I've had that thing for almost 7 years and never even put a ding in it. *sigh* And my neck hurts...I may not make it to the rest of CMA Fest.

What I Completed Today:

Created yet ANOTHER Kenny Chesney registration box.

Updated the prize bin for tonight with extra stickers and keychains.

Made 800 copies of Country Monkey fliers to hand out during the parade downtown for the Grand Opening of the Country Monkey tonight.

Went downtown and spent 30 minutes handing out the 800 fliers to the people gathered for the CMA Fest opening parade.

Went back to the office and called the Sprint VIP winners. These were randomly chosen people from the winners of the Nashville Acoustic Showcase tickets that had won entrance to the after-party/Meet & Greet with Gary Nichols.

Went over to the Country Monkey and bannered the entire place, then helped Cliff remove some of the ones from outside to add to the ones we had brought to put up inside.

Made more copies of the flyer and returned to downtown to hand out 600 more. This time around, we didn't have the parade crowd, but luckily the fan club parties had begun to line up, so we hit a couple of those - Little Big Town and Dierks Bentley.

Country Monkey:
-made sure the banners stayed up the entire time
-greeted listeners

What I Learned Today:

Flyering is NOT fun, but another necessary element to getting the word out.

If you mention 'Free Beer', people will attack you for fliers... even if they don't know what it is.

Some stars have an ego bigger than their music.

What I Completed Today:

Made a prize bin for the WKDF Beach Party.

Uploaded Cops and Jocks photos so that they could be used on the website. This took three hours.

Added a new Pizza Hut contest to the website.

Helped route Andrew Firestone where he needed to go in the station.

WKDF Beach Party:
-Ran security at the back door to ensure the VIP guests were checked off and had bracelets
-Also ran security for the stars the ensure the fans did not get out of control
-Routed the limos in and out of the parking area
-Ran security by the stage to ensure the stars were able to enter and exit the stage without complications
-Helped keep Jo Dee Messina's mother safe
-Located stars when it was time for their autograph signings
-Kept track of autographed merchandise for the station
-Removed WKDF banners from The Stage when the event was over

What I Learned Today:

Stars can be stubborn. But they can also have 'diva complexes' and be perfectly nice when you get a chance to speak to them.

Fans will do ANYTHING to get an autograph - even beg a star's mother to do it for them.

Darryl Worley is AMAZING with his fans.

What I Completed Today:

Checked Cliff's e-mail and sorted contest entries into subfolders.

Revamped the Country Monkey webpage on the WKDF website and added more information regarding the scheduled performance.

Did the weekly updates to the website and added some upcoming events.

Removed the Nacho Ordinary Trip contest from The Zone's website.

Updated the Opry and who is playing this week.

Added a new banner to the WKDF website, visit Florida.

Attended the Cops and Jocks softball game:
-Bannered the entire field the game was played on
-Bannered the rest of the ballpark
-Ran security for Kim and Dean
-Took pictures of the stars arriving
-Helped with various menial tasks
-Took pictures of the actual game in progress
-Routed fans in and out of meet/greets with the stars
-Removed all banners from the ballpark following the game

What I Learned Today:

Bannering is a major pain, but it has to be done.

Stars can be really snotty if they're late, but turn out to be really great guys once they've calmed down and taken a breather.

The fans come FIRST. I don't know how much I tried to knock that into another intern's head.

What I Completed Today:

Cleared Cliff's e-mailand sroted the contest entries into subfolders.

Pulled three Saturday Opry winners and called them.

Created a Kenny Chesney registration box for Kangaroo and Quizno's and then one for French's Shoes and Boots.

Sat down for 3 hours and called all of the Nashville Acoustic Showcase winners (over 100!) to let them know that tickets could be picked up in-house and make sure they would be picking up the tickets.

Joined Lauren and Shannon for another Sprint location in Murfreesboro, where we had Chick-Fil-A sandwiches. It was relatively low-key. Just the normal - unload the equipment and set up, then talk to Sprint customers for a couple hours and convince them to check out PowerVision. Then we gave them a set of tickets to the Nashville Acoustic Showcase and also prompted them to check out our Cops and Jocks softball game coming up on Monday. When our van appearance was over, we loaded up the table and prize bin and headed back to the station.
